In celebration of Earth Day (April 22, 2008), you are invited to Go Green with Your Library. From April 21-25 join us for a week of special events, prizes and much more to celebrate the special day and learn how using your public library can help save the environment.

    Here’s what’s happening….don’t miss a day!

  • Monday through Friday (April 21-25)—sample a healthy treat while supplies last!
  • Tuesday April 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. have a cup of organic, fair trade coffee (don’t worry, it’s delicious!).

You must bring your own mug. We will not be using disposable styrofoam cups.

  • Teens! Find special hidden bookmarks in the Teen Scene area and receive a special prize!
  • Instant prize winners throughout the week. Check out material and you could be an instant winner.
  • Free seeds while supply lasts
  • Free reusable bookmarks with easy tips for saving the environment.

Remember, the more you use Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library, the more you save the environment. Here are some ways:

  • Save a tree. Don’t buy a book, borrow one from the library.

  • Ever notice all the plastic wrap and packaging that comes with a new CD or DVD? Borrow a CD or DVD from the library instead of buying them new and avoid adding that refuse to the landfills. Each month, more than 45 tons of CDs become obsolete -- outdated or unwanted -- and also end up in landfills.

  • Don’t buy, read and then discard newspapers or magazines. Read them at the library.

  • Walk or ride your bike to the library. Get exercise, save fuel and have a fun-filled day free of charge!

  • Recycle your waste paper at a convenient location in the library parking lot

  • We reuse plastic bags...so bring yours in!

  • The library is the best place to educate yourself on global warming, becoming more energy efficient, detoxifying your life, recycling, reducing pollution, eating organic foods and much more. Check out our materials and learn how to change your life!

    Book Picks

April's book pick is Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult

    From Publisher's Weekly:

Picoult bangs out another ripped-from-the-zeitgeist winner, this time examining a condemned inmate's desire to be an organ donor. Freelance carpenter Shay Bourne was sentenced to death for killing a little girl, Elizabeth Nealon, and her cop stepfather. Eleven years after the murders, Elizabeth's sister, Claire, needs a heart transplant, and Shay volunteers, which complicates the state's execution plans. Meanwhile, death row has been the scene of some odd events since Shay's arrival—an AIDS victim goes into remission, an inmate's pet bird dies and is brought back to life, wine flows from the water faucets. The author brings other compelling elements to an already complex plot line: the priest who serves as Shay's spiritual adviser was on the jury that sentenced him; Shay's ACLU representative, Maggie Bloom, balances her professional moxie with her negative self-image and difficult relationship with her mother. Picoult moves the story along with lively debates about prisoner rights and religion, while plumbing the depths of mother-daughter relationships and examining the literal and metaphorical meanings of having heart. The point-of-view switches are abrupt, but this is a small flaw in an impressive book.
