Spotlight on Hiking in Northeast Ohio
August's spotlight shines on Hiking in Northeast Ohio. Northeast Ohio has many beautiful parks and trails to explore. Books such as Hiking Ohio by Mary Reed, Fifty Hikes in Ohio and Fifty More Hikes in Ohio by Ralph Ramey, list hiking trails by geographic area. Some of those in the Northeast Ohio region include Eagle Creek State Nature Preserve in Garrettsville, Findley State Park in Wellington, Hinkley Reservation in Hinkley Township, and Hell Hollow Wilderness Area in Painesville.
Hiking Ohio recommends three trails in Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Buckeye Trail: Red Lock to Boston Store, Stanford House to Brandywine Falls Loop, and Haskell Run to Ledges Trail. 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Cleveland by Diane Stresing includes suggestions for hikes in the Akron area also. This book lists hikes by special criteria, such as hikes featuring waterfalls, hikes good for children, hikes featuring wildflowers, and trails good for runners. Local trails listed are Adell Durbin Park and Arboretum, Silver Springs Park, and the Hike and Bike trail from Munroe Falls to Kent. You can read more about the Bike and Hike Trail on the Summit County Metro Parks website at www.summitmetroparks.org. You can even download a map of the trail, as well as maps of the other parks in the Metro Parks system.
The Buckey Trail (www.buckeyetrail.org) winds 1,435 miles around Ohio, with 26 sections each named for a town or feature within the section. Some segments of the trail pass through Northeast Ohio, including through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Follow the Blue Blazes: A Guide to Hiking Ohio's Buckeye Trail by Robert J. Pond is a guidebook to this trail. If you would like information on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath trail, go to www.canalwayohio.com. The Towpath trail is part of the Ohio & Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor, which currently encompasses 110 linear miles from New Philadelphia in the south to Cleveland in the north.
