For the Holidays
Pick up a copy of For the Holidays at the Information Desk. Listed are suggestions of holiday materials (music, movies, and books) in the adult department of Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library.

Community Jazz Band
The Community Jazz Band performs the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room. Their next concert will be Wednesday, December 3. Please bring a plate of cookies to share after the concert.

Library Board
The next meeting of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library Board of Trustees will be Monday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room.

Library Closings
The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library will be closed Wednesday, December 24 and Thursday, December 25 for Christmas. The library will close at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31 and be closed Thursday, January 1, 2004 for New Year's.

Book Tree
The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's 10 foot Christmas tree is on display in the magazine area of the library. This tree, sponsored by the Friends of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library, contains over 50 original hand-painted ornaments by local artists. Each ornament represents a classic book and includes such titles as The Hobbit, Alice in Wonderland, and David Copperfield.

Library Card Reminder
This is a reminder to stop by the library to check out an item at least once a year. This will keep your library card current, as well as let you see what new materials and services Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library has to offer.

Acme Community Cash Back Program
Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library is once again participating in the Acme Community Cash Back Program. Just bring your Acme receipt tapes (dated September 7, 2003 to May 15, 2004) to the Children's Department or put them in the box by the elevator. Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library receives one percent of the total amount of the receipts. During the 2002/2003 school year, patrons turned in over $136,000 worth of receipts.! Thank you for supporting the library!

Recycling
Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library is now participating in a recycling program with Abitibi Recycling Corporation called the Abitibi Paper Retriever Program. The Paper Retriever bin is located behind the library and is available 24 hours. Anyone in the community can drop off the following items suitable for recycling (all items must be clean and dry): newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogs, office and school papers, and mail. Stow-Munroe Falls elementary schools and middle school also participate in this program.

Have you heard about our new online services? You can now renew materials, place reserves, check fines, and more via the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's website at www.smfpl.org. Click on the catalog button, then select the online catalog (ipac) link. To access your account, enter your library card number and the last four digits of your phone number. Explore our new online services and see how easy and convenient your library transactions can be!

Upcoming Special Events

Coffee Club
Tuesdays December 2, 9, and 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Take a break from the holiday rush and savor a freshly brewed cup of Arabica's coffee at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. Come alone or bring a friend and enjoy books, magazines and a conversation.

Mention "Coffee Club" on Tuesdays when you check out and receive an entry slip for the library's drawing. Entry slips must be placed in the drawing box before 9:00 p.m. each Tuesday. Winners will be selected the following day. Prizes will be gift certificates for Arabica Coffee House.

This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library and Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library.

Toy Industry of Early Akron Program
Wednesday, December 17, 7:00 p.m.
What is on the minds of children this time of year? Toys, of course! Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library has just the program for families: Toy Industry of Early Akron. Akron was a center of toy manufacturing in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Michael Cohill will discuss the toys of this era and bring toys to show. In particular, he will teach youngsters how to play the marble game of "ringers", the game played in marble tournaments. Mr. Cohill is a board member of the American Toy and Marble Museum in Akron.

Ages four and up are welcome at this program to be held in the upstairs meeting room. No registration necessary.Bags of marbles will be available to children over age three. Remember to visit the Local History Room in December to see the Victorian Christmas displays. Featured will be marbles made in Akron, and antique stereoscope viewers and view cards.

Aviation Insecurity Program
Wednesday, January 14, 7:00 p.m., upstairs meeting room.

Andrew Thomas, local author and aviation security expert, will be discussing his latest book, Aviation Insecurity: the New Challenges of Air Travel, on Wednesday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room. Mr. Thomas is a leading security analyst, author, and global business expert who has worked in more than 120 countries on all seven continents. Two of his books are Air Rage: Crisis in the Skies and Aviation Insecurity: the New Challenges of Air Travel. Aviation Insecurity is the first book to analyze the aviation security failings that led directly to the September 11 attacks.

Mr. Thomas is a frequent contributor to the Fox News Channel and has appeared on more than 150 television and radio programs around the country, including The O'Reilly Factor, On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, and Court TV. He recently appeared on WKYC talking about the 70th anniversary of the first attack against commercial aviation.

Please plan to attend this very timely program. Mr. Thomas will be discussing his latest data, and there will be time for questions and comments from the audience. Refreshments will be served after the program. Registration is appreciated, but not required. Please call 330-688-3295 to register.

Recent Library Happenings

Holiday Bake-a-Thon

More than 100 people enjoyed tasting and voting for their favorite cookies at The Holiday Bake-a-Thon held November 15 at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. A total of 31 entries were received in both the Adult and Junior classes. Cookies were judged in one of four categories: drop cookies, decorated cutouts, non-baked cookies, and bar cookies.

The popular choice award went to Betty Stefano's Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies. The judges declared Candace Minchin's Almond Cremes Best of Show, with Sue Ballard's Peanut Butter Graham Truffles the runner-up. Other winners are listed below.

Harvest Festival

On Saturday, November 8 the Children's Room held a Harvest Festival for children of all ages. There were 39 in attendance. Activities included pumpkin bowling, a scarecrow dressing relay race, and crafts.

New Titles
New titles are arriving daily at the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. Check out the growing DVD collection, as well as books on CD. Some of the new titles this month are:

  • Books - Fiction: Old School a Novel by Tobias Wolff, In the Presence of Mine Enemies by Harry Turtledove, A Round-Heeled Woman by Jane Juska, and The Meaning of Consuelo by Judith Ortiz Cofer.

    Computer Training
    The library offers classes for beginning computer users and more advanced users. They include Introduction to Computers, Introduction to the Internet, and training in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Classes are offered both day and evening at no charge. The computer class schedule for January will be released Monday, December 29 at 9:00 a.m. The class calendar can be viewed at www.smfpl.org/calendar.htm.     Computer Volunteer
    Computer volunteer, Tom Labbe, is available to help patrons with computer questions during the following hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 1:00 - 2:30.

    Local History Room

    The Local History Room will be decorated in a Victorian theme this Christmas. This includes gifts under the tree, wall decorations, and tree ornaments. If you have any Victorian artifacts you would be willing to loan for the month of December, please call Local History Coordinator, Bridget Hair, at 330-688-3295.     Children of all ages and their families are welcome to stop by the library any time on this evening to create a wonderful tree decoration for our holiday tree. Help us make the library a beautiful place during the month of December. No registration is required.

    Winter Break Activities at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library
    Monday, December 29 from 10:00 to Noon.
    School age kids are welcome to make a great craft. Make and take home your very own snow globe. No registration is required.

    Tuesday, December 30 - all day.
    Make a special New Year's card for someone special. Children ages four and up can use our craft supplies to create a holiday greeting. Crafts will be available all day while supplies last. No registration is required.

    Wednesday, December 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    Celebrate the New Year without staying up late. Join us for crafts, games, refreshments and a count down to noon. Don't miss the fun of a balloon drop at the count of noon. For children of all ages and their families. No registration is required.

    Drive-Up Window
    Don't forget about the Drive-Up Window service at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. This is an especially helpful service during inclement weather! The drive-up window is open during regular library hours and closes 15 minutes before library closing.

    Pick 5 Bestsellers Club
    How would you like to automatically be placed on the reserve list for five of your favorite popular authors? Join our Bestsellers Club and that's exactly what will happen! Just pick up a form at the Circulation Desk and join over 300 satisfied members. Are you already a member, but would like to change an author or two? Ask for an "add/delete" form at the circulation desk. It's just that easy!

    Art on Display

    Visit The Corner Gallery to view the artwork of December artist Sandra Dennison. Dennison is a professional artist who specializes in oil, pastel, and graphite. She focuses on capturing realism and the dramatic contrast from light to dark. Dennison has exhibited in shows around the country and her work is in the permanent collections of the Eldorado Gallery in Colorado and the Seaside Gallery in North Carolina.

    Friends of the Library

    The Friends, one of the largest organizations in Stow, is a citizen support group for Library services and activities. They sponsor booksales as well as the annual Needlework Show and other activities. Friends meet the third Tuesday of every month (except December and July) at 2:00 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room.

    Books on Display

    "Celebrate Around the World" on display in the Quiet Study area features books and videos about Holiday celebrations. Examples include the video A Taste of Chanukah a Celebration of the Joys & Music of the Holiday and the new book Christmas Family Gatherings: Recipes and Ideas for Celebrating With People You Love by Donata Maggipinto. Festivals of the World: the Illustrated Guide to Celebrations, Customs, Events, and Holidays by Elizabeth Breuill is located in the Adult Reference section. The Children's Department has many books available on world holidays also. To find the dates of world holidays, try www.earthcalendar.net where you can find holidays by date, country, or religion.

    "Happy Holidays" near the Quiet Study area is a display of Christmas videos and books. Look for a display of holiday music CDs and tapes over the copier near the stairs.

    Ideals Christmas issues are on display near the Information Desk.

    Spotlight on Cookbooks

         December's Spotlight shines on "Cookbooks". Cookbooks for every taste and any occassion are available from Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. Located in the 641 section, cookbooks range from old favorites, such as Betty Crocker's Cookbook and Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook, to new titles, such as The Way We Cook: Recipes From the New American Kitchen by Sheryl Julian and Julie Riven. Cookbooks can be found in many categories, including baking, desserts, appetizers, and drinks. There are also cookbooks for those with diabetes, cancer, heart problems, and allergies.

        Celebrity chef cookbooks are popular and Stow-Munroe Falls Pubic Library has several. From Emeril's Kitchens: Favorite Recipes From Emeril's Restaurants by Emeril Lagasse is on the New Non-Fiction book shelf. Other titles are The French Chef Cookbook by Julia Child, Wolfgang Puck's Pizza, Pasta and More! by Wolfgang Puck, and Ciao Italia - Bringing Italy Home: Regional Recipes, Flavors, and Traditions As Seen on the Public Television Series Ciao Italia by Mary Ann Esposito. The Food Network website at www.foodnetwork.com is a good site for locating celebrity chef programs and Julia Child offers lessons with Master Chefs at www.pbs.org/juliachild.

        French, Italian, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Spanish, and Mexican cookbooks are just a few of the international cookbooks on the shelves. Regional recipes from the United States are found in cookbooks such as Classical Southern Cooking: a Celebration of the Cuisine of the Old South by Damon Lee Fowler and New England's Cooking Secrets: Starring the Best Restaurants and Inns of New England by Kathleen DeVanna Fish.

        Books on entertaining are located near the cookbooks in the 642 section. Relax, Company's Coming!: 150 Recipes for Stress-Free Entertaining by Kathy Gunst, Around the Table: Easy Menus for Cozy Entertaining at Home by Ellen Wright, and Desperation Entertaining by Beverly Mills and Alicia Ross are three of the titles. Magazines often have ideas for entertaining. Try the online versions of Family Circle (www.familycircle.com), Woman's Day (www.womansday.com), and Better Homes and Gardens (www.bhg.com) for holiday recipes and entertaining ideas.

    Staff Picks

    December's staff pick is The Ladies of Covington Send Their Love by by Joan Medlicott, recommended by Adult Services Associate Chris Caccamo. Three widows, placed in a Pennsylvania boardinghouse by their children decide to change their lives when one of the ladies inherits a deteriorating farmhouse in Covington, North Carolina. Despite being well into their 60's, the ladies set out to fix up the property and make a new home and a new life for themselves. It's never too late for a new beginning! Fans of the Mitford books may really like this book. Other titles by Medlicott include Gardens of Covington and From the Heart of Covington.

    Website of the Month

    December's Website of the Month is actually two new websites created to accommodate cellphone switchers. These two sites, www.cellupdate.com, and www.wirefly.com offer plan comparisons by zip code and price. WireFly offers ratings of cellphone plans. These sites are helpful to consumers trying to decide on a cellphone plan.
