Spotlight on American Presidents
July's Spotlight shines on "American Presidents."
With the passing of former President Ronald Reagan, the release of former President Bill Clinton's biography, and the upcoming presidential election, you may wish to take a look at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library's collection of materials on American Presidents. The biography section in both the Children's and Adult Departments contains books about the presidents under the last name of the president. Popular presidential biographies include John Adams by David G. McCullough and Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris. Many books about the presidents are also located in the 973 (American History) section. Buckeye Presidents: Ohioans in the White House, published by the Kent State University press and edited by Philip Weeks, Touched with Fire: Five Presidents and the Civil War Battles that Made Them by James M. Perry, and Shadow: Five Presidents and the Legacy of Watergate by Bob Woodward are all located in 973.
The Complete American Presidents Sourcebook by Roger Matuz in the Reference section is a five-volume work containing biographies of each president from George Washington to George W. Bush. Also found in the Reference section is Facts About the Presidents: a Compilation of Biographical and Historical Information by Joseph Nathan Kane. If you are interested in reading about the people who surround and influence the presidents, try First Mothers: the Women Who Shaped the Presidents by Bonnie Angelo, All the Presidents' Children: Triumph and Tragedy in the Lives of America's First Families by Doug Wead, and First Ladies by Margaret Truman. You can read about the Presidents' homes and libraries (Homes and Libraries of the Presidents: An Interpretive Guide by William G. Clotworthy), travel (Air Force One: A History of the Presidents and Their Planes by Kenneth T. Walsh, and speeches (My Fellow Americans: The Most Important Speeches of America's Presidents, from George Washington to George W. Bush, compiled by Michael Waldman; CDs narrated by George Stephanopoulos.)
New books about presidential politics, policies, and personalities include Misunderestimated: The President Battles Terrorism, John Kerry, and the Bush Haters by Bill Sammon, Plan of Attack by Bob Woodward, Why Lincoln Matters: Today More Than Ever by Mario M. Cuomo, and My Life by William Jefferson Clinton. Videos about the presidents include feature films and documentaries. Some titles are American President, with Michael Douglas, Air Force One with Harrison Ford, All the Presidents Men with Dustin Hoffman, and documentaries Hail to the Chief: Portraits of American Presidents by NBC News Productions and JFK, a Presidency Revealed (DVD) by A&E Television Networks.
