Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, especially for Jack and Mabel.  Childless, they are drifting apart--- breaking under the weight of work and crumbling from lonliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next day, the child is gone but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees.  Faina, as she calls herself, is a child of the woods who hunts with a red fox by her side. AS JAck and Mabel try to understand her, they come to love her as their own.  But things are rarely as they appear and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform them all.
