Kindergarten Readiness Activity Series

Kindergarten Readiness Home Activity Series

You can prepare your 4- or 5-year-old child for kindergarten success by practicing the necessary skills at home, and Spike’s Place is here to help! Every month, stories, songs, and tips will be posted on this page, and activity kits will be available to pick up while supplies last. These activities will help your child practice skills recommended by the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District. Glue, crayons, and scissors will be needed to complete the activities each month. If you do not own those items, starter kits that include these additional supplies are available upon request. Please be kind and take one starter kit per family, as supplies are limited.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Activity Kits Available to Pick Up
Aug. 10 - 15, Sept. 8 - 12, Oct. 5 - 10, Nov. 9 - 14, and Dec. 7 - 12, 2020

October 2020 Activities, Songs, and Tips

Opening Song: Can't Wait to Celebrate, by Jim Gill

Have fun following along with the actions of the song! Beginning learning sessions with the same song each time helps children learn to anticipate what happens next and builds confidence.

Activity 1: Cutting Play-Doh

This activity is part of the Take-Home Kit available to pick up at the library October 5 - 10, 2020, or click the button to download and print instructions for the activity.

Watch Miss Evie's demonstration of this activity.

Miss Evie has more tips to help you teach your child to use scissors.

Finger Play Song: One From the Left, by Jim Gill

Finger play songs help your child develop fine motor skills.

Activity 2: Match the Rhyming Words Worksheet

This activity is part of the Take-Home Kit available to pick up at the library October 5 - 10, 2020, or click the button to download and print the worksheet at home.

Story Time

Choose a book (or two, or more) at home to read aloud, or watch a Spike's Place Story Time at Home video with your child. Miss Amy reads about some colorful (and funny) buttons in "The Button Book" by Sally Nicholls.

Another great resource for story time videos is The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Daytime Emmy-nominated and award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online, which streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Kristen Bell, Rita Moreno, Viola Davis, Jaime Camil, Kevin Costner, Lily Tomlin, Sarah Silverman, Betty White, Wanda Sykes and dozens more.

Activity 3: Shape Lines Patterns Worksheet

This activity is part of the Take-Home Kit available to pick up at the library October 5 - 10, 2020, or click the button to download and print the worksheet at home.

This is the time to help your child learn to use the correct hand position for holding a writing tool.

Activity 4: Make Your Own Music

Use items you can find around the house to keep rhythm or make musical sounds, and then join in with Laurie Berkner.

Closing Song: "Drivin' in My Car" by Ralph's World

Tme to say goodbye! Let's drive away from learning time with one of our favorite songs.
