Upcoming Library Closings
The library will be closed all day on Wednesday, November 14.
The library will also close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21 and be closed all day on Thursday, November 22 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Coffee With the Editor
The next Coffee With the Editor will be Wednesday, November 7 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Back By Popular Demand.....Book Bags!!
You can again purchase Zippered Top Pocket Book Bags at the front Circulation Desk at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. These are roomy bags
with a gusseted bottom and made of 600 denier polyester nylon material. They have 24-inch long handles. The bags are $10, including tax. All
proceeds benefit the Stow-Munroe Falls Library Foundation.
Library Board
The October meeting of the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library Board of Trustees will be Monday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Local History Room. To read minutes from previous board meetings go to www.smfpl.org/trustees.htm.
Silent Auction/Miniature Trees Return
The Friends of Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library are once again having their Miniature Christmas tree silent auction. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library.
All materials used are tax deductible.
Decorated trees should be returned to the library on November 1 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The tree display and silent auction will run from November 3 to November 29. Judging will be November 8. Silent auction ends Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. High bidders
may pay for and take home their trees on Thursday, November 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, November 30 from 10 a.m. until noon.
Character Counts!
October 21 through October 27 is Character Counts week at the library. To raise awareness of this valuable organization, library staff will be wearing special buttons
and will be wearing different colors each day to represent the colors of the Six Pillars of Character. The colors for the week will be blue on Monday (Trustworthiness),
yellow on Tuesday (Respect), green on Wednesday (Responsibility), orange on Thursday (Fairness), red on Friday (Caring) and purple on Saturday (Citizenship).
Informational brochures on the Character Counts organization will be available at all public service desks.

Upcoming Special Events
Jazz Band Concert
The next performance of the community jazz band will be Wednesday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stow-Munroe Falls meeting
room of the library. The concert is free. Reservations are not required.
Bridge Club
Come to the library for cards and conversation. The Bridge Club will meet on the second Monday of the month from 12:45 until 3:30 p.m.
Players should arrive at 12:45 p.m. and bridge will begin promptly at 1 p.m. Bridge Club meets
in the Stow-Munroe Falls meeting room at the library. There is no fee to join the club, but a small collection will be taken for refreshments.

Flu shots at the library
The Summit County Health District will be giving flu shots in the upstairs meeting rooms at the library on Tuesday, November 6 from 9:00 a.m. until noon.
Cost is $25. Appointments are not required. The health department recommends flu shots for :
People who are 50 years or older
Children aged 6 to 59 months
Pregnant Women
Persons of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
Persons who are household contacts of people at risk
Health care workers
The Summit County Health District will bill the following: Medicare, Summacare Secure, Summacare Commercial, Medicaid, Buckeye,
Caresource and Unison. All others must pay $25 and apply for reimbursement through their insurance.
No one will be turned away due to an inability to pay.
All questions on the flu vaccines should be directed to the Summit County Health District at 330-926-5700 or www.schd.org.
Library staff will not be able to answer specific questions on your insurance or vaccines.

Recent Library Happenings
The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library Foundation's 2nd Annual Dessert Extravaganza was held September 8 at the library and was a great success!
Restaurants from Stow, Munroe Falls and surrounding communities donated "gourmet desserts" for event participants to sample.

Gift baskets, prizes, autographed books and other items were auctioned off at the event, proceeds benefitting the Foundation.
 

Library staff members Paul Eizenheimer and Diana Parker participated in Munroe Falls' Annual Community Day on September 16.

Adult Services
Book Bites
Read a book and cook up a masterpiece!
Amateur chefs of all ages are invited to cook, bake or make a dish and submit it in one of our literary categories during the
Book Bites program on Saturday, December 8. Entries will be accepted between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Closed
judging will be from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Public tasting will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. or until all portions
are gone.
Your recipe will be included in our recipe book!
Anyone is welcome to come and taste the treats and take home a recipe book.
The library will not be responsible for the quality of any food offered for tasting.
Pick up a booklet of rules and categories and a brochure with book/recipe suggestions
beginning Monday, November 5. Contact Chrissy Braun or Chris Caccamo at 330-688-3295 with any questions.
All ages welcome.
Registration is not required.
Recipes must be submitted at least one week prior to event for inclusion in the recipe book.
Need to Use a Computer? Call ahead and reserve one!
Computers with Internet Access, located in the Adult Services Department of the library are always in great demand. If you are planning a
trip to the library to use the computer, please call ahead and make a reservation. There may NOT be one available if you don't make a reservation!
Computer time can be reserved up to one week in advance. Staff at the Adult Information Desk can schedule you for up to two hours of time once per day, Monday through Saturday
and up to one hour of time on Sunday. Don't be disappointed! Call ahead! To make an appointment, call the Adult Services Department at 330-688-3295.
Evening Book Discussions
The evening book discussion group with Amy Garrett meets through April 2008. Discussions will be on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. except in November and
December.The November meeting will be the third Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and the December meeting will be the second Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
Copies of the book will again be available at the Reference Desk prior to the discussion date.

New Book Discussion Group
A new book discussion group with group leader Barbara Nelson will meet the first Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m.
The next meeting will be Monday, November 5 with discussion of the book "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. Books will be available at the Reference Desk prior to the discussion date.
Registration is not required. Bring with you suggestions for titles to be discussed later in the year.

Computer Training
The library offers classes for beginning computer users and more advanced users. They include Introduction to Computers, Introduction to the Internet,
and training in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Classes are offered both day and evening at no charge. The class calendar can be viewed at www.smfpl.org/calendar.htm.
New Computer Class Signup Procedure
You no longer have to sign up for computer classes weeks ahead of time!
Instead, we will have numbered tickets for each class at the Adult Information Desk. On the day of the class, starting
one half-hour before class time, the tickets will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Students should have their Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library cards available when they come for
their tickets.
The classroom has eleven seats at computers and an additional three seats without a computer. If all eleven "computer"
tickets are taken, three "non-computer" tickets will go to the next three students.This change is to prevent students from being closed out of classes on the first day of registrations. We hope that
this new system will make it easier for out students to get the classes they want.
Teens
Fantasy Book Discussion Group for Teens
Ages 12 to 18 can join this group to talk about fantasy books! Each meeting, we'll pick a different book to read and discuss, as well as hear about upcoming new teen fantasy books.
This month's book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by J. K. Rowling on Monday, November 17 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
How does it compare to the earlier books? What else can you read now that the series is over?
Come and find out! Multiple copies of the book are available for checkout at the Reference Desk.
Anime Club
The next Anime Club for ages 12 through 18 will be Saturday, November 3 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Join other otaku (anime fans) to talk about your favorite series, characters, and anything else anime-related.
We will screen a few new shows and share manga and anime news. Snacks provided
Chess Club
The next Chess Club will be Tuesday, November 20.
Peer instruction is from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. and game play is from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Play chess against a variety of opponents, and learn new moves. Chess club is for students age 5 and older
who are familiar with the basic rules of chess. Snacks provided. No registration is necessary.

Children's
Tasty Trekkers
Register now for the Tasty Trekkers program in the Children’s Department.
Travel the world with Miss Jen on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Each month, students in grades 1 to 5 will learn about a
different country and their culture by preparing a delicious dish. They will play games and learn about children from around the world.
Each participant will receive a passport. Come every month to have your passport stamped. There will be five more countries to visit in 2008.
Program dates are October 31, November 28 and December 19.

Drive-Up Window
Don't forget about the Drive-Up Window service at Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library. This is an especially helpful service during inclement weather! The drive-up window is open during regular library hours and closes 15 minutes before library closing.
Pick 5 Bestsellers Club
Don't have a computer or are you too busy to get to your computer?
How would you like our staff to automatically place you on the reserve list for five of your favorite popular authors?
Join our Bestsellers Club and that's exactly what will happen! Just pick up a form at the Circulation Desk and join over 300 satisfied members. Are you already a member, but would like to change an author or two? Ask for an "add/delete" form at the circulation desk. It's just that easy!

Art on Display
The watercolors of area resident Jean Beatty will be on display in the Corner Gallery from through November 5.
She has been painting for years and is a member of the Hudson Society of Artists.
Coming November 7 through December 3 in the Corner Gallery will be miniature quilts by Judith Hindall.
Russ O'Brien's blown glass will be on display in display case #1 through November 6.
Nadine Chapman's notecards will be on display in display case #2 through November 5
Sylvia Trundle's miniature watercolors: figure studies will be on display in display case #1 November 8 through December 3.
Sue Archer's turkey collection will be on display in display case #2 November 8 through December 3
These exhibits may be viewed during regular library hours.

Library Foundation
The Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library Foundation was incorporated in 1994 as a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3)
organizaton. The Foundation is is dedicated to ensuring a great library system by raising, managing and allocating funds
to expand and improve the library.
Why a Foundation? Maintaining Stow and Munroe Falls' top-notch library isn't possible with public funding alone. The Foundation's mission
is to stabilize the library in times of reduced public funding and secure the ongoing excellence of the library.

The next Foundation meeting is Tuesday, November 20 at 5:00 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Friends
of the Library
The Friends of the Library is a citizen support group for Library services and activities. They sponsor booksales as well as the annual Needlework Show and other activities.
Friends meet the third Tuesday of every month (except December and July) at 2:00 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room.

Quilt on Display

This month's quilt is by Kendal Taylor. It will be on display over the main check-out desk throughout October.
The squares "grandmother's garden" were made during the 1930's by her grandfather's friend. In the 1980's, a top was
made and then hand-quilted by her guild at the First Congregational Church in Tallmadge.
