Q. I don’t use IM. Where do I start?

A. You don’t need to have an IM client to use the chat widget. Just start typing in the “Chat” box on the Ask SMFPL page.

Q. Will I need to wait to chat with the librarian?

A. Patrons visiting the library in person will have priority. However, we will answer your question as soon as we are able, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q. Should I be concerned about giving my personal information to SMFPL staff on IM?

A. The library does not save any logs of chats, nor do we save e-mails unless they are of a threatening nature. We will not publish personal information that is discussed in our sessions.

Q. What kind of questions can I ask the library?

A. Appropriate questions should be factual or short research questions that can be quickly answered. Examples include:

     Do you have this book / CD / movie, etc.

A. A screen name is a name that you choose to identify yourself online when instant messaging with others.

Q. Can I chat if the computer I am using does not have instant messaging software installed?

A. Yes! If you are using a computer that does not have instant messaging software installed, you can log in to the library’s website at and type your question in the “Chat” box on the left hand side of the page.
